Le Paradis Latin is one of the oldest musical theater venues in the world and the only cabaret on the Left Bank. The theater opened in 1803 as the ‘Theatre Latin’, the brainchild of no less a person than Napoleon Bonaparte. By the 1830s, it was one of the highlights of Paris life, visited by artists, intellectuals, students, workers, merchants and aristocrats.
Destroyed by war in the 1870s, the building was restored to glory by Gustav Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame). In 1889, it reopened as ‘Le Paradis Latin’, and was a triumphant success. But in the early 20th century Montmartre became the center of Paris nightlife; Le Paradis Latin declined and the theater fell into disrepair.
In the 1970s, a property developer discovered not only the metal framework of Gustav Eiffel but also lavish theatrical decoration and props. Thanks to his vision, Le Paradis Latin was restored once again and has been a popular venue ever since.
The Paradis Latin variety show includes the famous French Can Can and reflects the days when Paris was famous for risqué entertainments. The sexy, 2-hour show features tasteful nudity and is a lot of fun, but not suitable for children.
