Spend a delightful afternoon in one of the most picturesque parts of Paris on the Wine Promenade in Montmartre tour.
Topped by the white Sacre Coeur basilica, Montmartre is the highest hill in Paris. Completely rural until a century ago, Montmartre is now the last ‘village’ within the Paris metropolis. This beautiful area has always attracted artists and painters. Artistic geniuses who have had studios or worked in Montmartre include Salvador Dalí, Modigliani, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.
Your 3-hour walking tour takes you to various wine bars and cafes in Montmartre. Along the way your wine expert will teach you how to taste wine and understand labels, tell you about the wine regions and show you interesting and historic aspects of Montmartre.
The tour will probably start with a white wine at a small wine bar opened in 1904 on a sweet little square with chestnut trees adjacent to a typically ‘Montmartre staircase’ .
You will then walk past The Lapin Agile, a pink house where entertainers have been performing for decades and where Picasso, Modigliani, plus numerous writers and musicians used to spend time. Passing the Montmartre vineyards you will go through one of the narrowest paths in Paris and arrive in front of the Moulin de la Galette, which features in so many of the most famous impressionist paintings.
You will pass the former house of Dalida, the Italian Egyptian singer and actress who found fame in France. Dalida died in 1987 but her old Montmartrian-style house bears an inscription from her friends, "Friends from Montmartre will always remember you". You’ll see Picasso's old workshop, where he painted the famous ‘Demoiselles d'Avignon’, before reaching the venue for the second tasting.
You will enjoy your second tasting sitting on the edge of a hill under the shade of trees and with a view over the rooftops of Paris.
On the way to the third venue, you will then see the grocery store that featured in the famous film ‘Amelie’ (‘Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain’). The third tasting happens in a most unusual location for wine. Only the locals know how to find the place. Here you can also order a plate of meats or cheese (payable direct) to accompany the wine. You can also buy a bottle of wine or two to take home.
At the end of the tour, you are free to return to the top of the Hill of Montmartre to visit the Place du Tertre (where many artists are waiting to draw or paint your portrait) and the pristine white basilica of Sacre Coeur. You need to make your own arrangements to return to your accommodation afterwards.
